The Lili Alford Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established 2012 by the Grace Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church Sanctuary Servants in memory of their leader, Lili Alford, who served God and her church as an usher for more than 23 years; to assist deserving students with an opportunity to further their education for the up building of the kingdom of God. The scholarship established to provide a one-time $1000 award to the deserving student. The scholarship is a reflection of the ministry’s desire to help deserving young people in their pursuit of higher learning.

The Lili Alford Memorial Scholarship selection committee is comprised of volunteers that are in no way directly or indirectly associated with any member or body of the Grace Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church family.All applications are reviewed without any conflict of interest or bias, and are selected based on the committee’s discretion with no other outside interest.


  • Students must  have a passion for service and leadership, done with kindness. 
  •  Excel academically. 
  • Demonstrate excellence in the areas of service, academics and leadership. 
  • Be active in their church home and church school (will require letter of recommendation). 
  • Be active in their community (able to provide proof of community service). 
  • Must be a graduating senior. 
  •  Must use funds for undergraduate studies or school.
  • Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. 
  •  Have made application or have been accepted to an undergraduate school. 
  • Complete an application along with a 1,500 word essay, prior to deadline. If application packet is submitted via mail it must be post marked by May 31, 2017. No applications will be accepted after the deadline 


  • Scholarship applications will be reviewed and judged by an outside source/committee.
  • The committee will evaluate each applicant based on the guidelines adopted.
  • The committee reserves the right to interview each qualified applicant before the initial scholarship is awarded and may require future interviews at their discretion
  • Scholarships will be awarded annually provided the funds are available.
  • The scholarship will be presented at the annual Lili Alford banquet held each year.
  • After an application is approved by the scholarship Committee, scholarship funds will be sent directly to the designated institution and to be applied to the individual student’s account. There will be two (2) separate disbursements made; one $500 disbursement in the Fall Semester (August) and the second $500 disbursement in the Spring Semester (January). The second disbursement will be contingent on proof (copy of student’s current schedule, enrollment verification, or other official school documentation) of the student’s continual enrollment in school. A letter of this transaction will be sent to the student.

Application Summary: ( (all material must be submitted at one time) 

All applications and essays must be typed or clearly printed in blue or black ink.  Every blank in the scholarship application must be completed. This includes a complete address and zip code. If a particular portion of the application does not apply to the applicant, N/A should be placed in that blank.  Incomplete applications will not be considered for evaluation.  Essay must adhere to the prescribed topic. (See application for topic details)  All applications must include an official high school transcript.  Applicants must submit three (3) letters of recommendation (person providing recommendation cannot be relatives of applicants):  One letter of recommendation from either the Pastor, Youth Pastor, Youth Director, Sunday School Superintendent, or person within the church leadership who knows the spiritual stewardship of the applicant.  The second letter of recommendation must be from a current/ former teacher, guidance counselor or principal who knows the academic capabilities of the applicant.  The third letter of recommendation must be from an organization that has knowledge of the applicant’s volunteer service. Include the three (3) letters of recommendation in sealed envelopes with your completed application.  Applications must be authentic with original signatures. Facsimiles will not be considered for evaluation.
